Both are synthetic research peptides, both appear in models of tissue regeneration, yet they originate from entirely different directions and act at different points. This page sets out what lies behind the two molecules, why the literature frequently considers them together, and in which formats they are available as research material at Peptélia.

The two molecules at a glance

BPC-157

BPC-157 is a synthetic pentadecapeptide — fifteen amino acids — whose sequence was derived from a protein described in gastric juice. The abbreviation stands for “Body Protection Compound”. In the preclinical literature it serves as a model substance when processes around tissue integrity and angiogenesis are examined in cell and animal models. BPC-157 is not approved as a medicinal product in any country.

TB-500

TB-500 is the common designation for a synthetic fragment or analogue of the endogenous protein thymosin beta-4. It comprises seven amino acids and is used in research as a tool for investigating cytoskeletal processes — actin binding in particular — and cell migration. TB-500 is likewise not an approved medicinal product. A more detailed classification is given in the library entry on TB-500.

Why the literature looks at both together

The reason is methodological, not pharmacological. Both peptides appear in the same class of preclinical models — models in which tissue repair, cell migration and the formation of new blood vessels are studied. Anyone mapping such processes in a model frequently works with several reference substances in parallel in order to keep different points of action distinguishable.

That is precisely where the substantive difference lies: work on BPC-157 centres mainly on vessel formation and tissue integrity, work on TB-500 on actin dynamics and cell migration. Two different questions that can be examined side by side within the same experimental setup — hence the frequent joint mention. Statements as to whether the two substances complement, reinforce or influence one another cannot be derived from this literature and are expressly not made here.

All findings referred to here come from preclinical investigations in cell and animal models. They are described in the preclinical literature and are reported neutrally; these findings do not support conclusions about effects in humans.

Formats available at Peptélia

Both peptides are offered individually as a lyophilised powder in a vial, as a capsule formulation and in a combined variant:

Research Set BPC-157 + TB-500 – both peptides together, 69,90 €

BPC-157 + TB-500 capsules – 60 capsules combined, 89,90 €

BPC-157 – research peptide 10 mg – lyophilised, in a vial, 39,90 €

BPC-157 capsules – 60 capsules, 59,90 €

BPC-157 nasal spray 10 mg / 10 ml – metered research formulation, 71,00 €

TB-500 – peptide 10 mg – lyophilised, in a vial, 34,90 €

TB-500 – peptide 15 mg – lyophilised, in a vial, 42,90 €

TB-500 capsules – 60 capsules, 74,90 €

The individual products are listed in the BPC-157 and TB-500 categories.

Vial or capsule — where the difference lies

The question comes up particularly often with this pair of substances because both formats are offered. Lyophilised material in a vial is the format of choice whenever the experimental setup calls for a defined concentration in solution: the substance is reconstituted, and the concentration follows from the nominal quantity and the volume added. Capsules are pre-portioned formulations without that degree of freedom; they suit standardised setups in which the amount per unit is meant to be fixed.

For storage the same principle applies in both cases: dry, cool and protected from light. Lyophilised material is stable over long periods under these conditions. After reconstitution the shelf life shortens considerably, and it does so primarily because of the sterility limit of the bacteriostatic water rather than because of peptide chemistry.

What to look for in the certificate of analysis

With two substances in the same experimental setup, the documentation requirement doubles: every batch needs its own certificate. A sound certificate of analysis (COA) states three things — an unambiguous batch number, the purity determined by HPLC together with the complete chromatogram, and mass spectrometric confirmation of the molecular mass. If one of these is missing, the batch is not traceably documented.

Matching the batch number on the label against the one named in the certificate is especially important. A certificate belonging to a batch other than the material in the vial documents nothing. How to read a COA in detail is set out in the guide Reading a peptide COA correctly.

Frequently asked questions

What is the difference between BPC-157 and TB-500?

Origin and point of action. BPC-157 is a 15-amino-acid peptide with a sequence taken from a gastric juice protein and is studied in models of tissue integrity and angiogenesis. TB-500 is a 7-amino-acid fragment of thymosin beta-4 and serves as a tool for questions of actin dynamics and cell migration. Structurally, the two have nothing in common.

Are BPC-157 and TB-500 available as capsules?

Yes, both individually and combined in a pack of 60. Capsules are pre-portioned research formulations; where a freely selectable concentration in solution is required, the lyophilised material in a vial is used instead.

What dosage is customary?

Peptélia makes no statements on this. Neither substance is approved as a medicinal product, so no validated dosing scheme exists. The concentrations named in the literature come from individual cell and animal models and are tied to their respective experimental setups; they cannot be transferred to other models or to humans. The concentration used in an experiment follows from the researcher’s own study design and the primary literature.

Are BPC-157 and TB-500 legal in Germany?

Neither is an approved medicinal product. Obtaining them as research chemicals for scientific laboratory purposes is possible; any application in humans or animals is excluded. The legal framework is set out in the article Are peptides legal in Germany?

Important notice

BPC-157 and TB-500 are not medicinal products, not food supplements and not cosmetics. Application in humans or animals, as well as any diagnostic or therapeutic use, is expressly excluded. The information on this page reports the state of the published research literature and does not constitute a dosing, application or health recommendation.

For research use only.
