Structurally the molecule is based on a short section of adrenocorticotropic hormone (ACTH): it combines the fragment ACTH(4–7) with the appended tripeptide proline-glycine-proline, which is intended to increase the stability of the molecule against enzymatic degradation. The full sequence is Met-Glu-His-Phe-Pro-Gly-Pro.

Semax therefore belongs to the group of so-called melanocortin fragment analogues – synthetic peptides derived from endogenous hormone sequences but deliberately altered by chemical means. Outside individual countries of the Russian-speaking region, Semax holds no approval as a medicine. In international trade the substance is consequently handled exclusively as a research chemical for laboratory purposes.

Profile

Molecule type: synthetic peptide, ACTH(4–7) analogue with Pro-Gly-Pro extension

Number of amino acids: 7 (heptapeptide)

Origin: developed at research institutes in Russia

Research classification: research chemical, Research Use Only (RUO)

Research context

Semax is studied above all in basic neurobiological research. Published work – a considerable part of it from Russian institutes – deals with the behaviour of the peptide in cell culture and animal models of the central nervous system. Among other things, the molecule is examined in connection with neurotrophic signalling pathways, for instance the expression of factors such as BDNF in experimental models.

Further lines of research concern the question of how short ACTH fragments without hormonal action on the adrenal cortex interact with neuronal receptor systems, as well as methodological work on the stability and degradation of modified peptides. One point matters for classification: these studies describe laboratory findings and observations in animal experiments, as described in the preclinical literature. They do not support conclusions about effects in humans and are reported here in purely descriptive terms.

Quality criteria for laboratory procurement

As with all research peptides: without documented quality, experimental results are not sound. The standard includes a batch-specific certificate of analysis (COA) with HPLC purity determination and mass-spectrometric identity testing. The batch number on the container must match the test report so that traceability is assured.

For laboratory purposes Semax is usually supplied as a lyophilised powder. It is stored dry, protected from light and cool; storage in the freezer is established practice for longer periods. Containers that have been opened should be processed promptly or resealed airtight.

Frequently asked questions

Is Semax legal?

In Germany and most Western countries, Semax is not an approved medicine. As a research chemical the peptide can be obtained legally for scientific purposes; supply or use for application in humans is excluded. The regulations of the country in which the material is used are always decisive.

What should be checked on the COA?

Three points are decisive: a unique batch number, a purity figure determined by HPLC and confirmation of the correct molecular mass by mass spectrometry. A COA without a batch reference has little value, because it cannot be assigned to the specific product.

How is Semax stored?

The lyophilised material is stored cool, dry and dark; for long-term storage in the laboratory the freezer is customary. Frequent thawing and refreezing should be avoided, because temperature cycling can impair the integrity of peptides.

Available at Peptélia

Peptélia carries Semax as research material with batch-specific documentation and a certificate of analysis (COA). All available offers can be found in the Semax category at Peptélia.

Important notice

All substances offered by Peptélia are intended exclusively for scientific use in the laboratory (Research Use Only). They are not medicines, not food supplements and not cosmetics. Use in humans or animals, as well as any diagnostic or therapeutic use, is expressly excluded.

For research use only.
