KPV ist ein Tripeptid aus den Aminosäuren Lysin, Prolin und Valin und entspricht dem C-terminalen Fragment (Positionen 11–13) des alpha-Melanozyten-stimulierenden Hormons (alpha-MSH). In der Forschungsliteratur wird KPV vor allem in Zellkultur- und Tiermodellen beschrieben, etwa in Arbeiten zu Entzündungssignalwegen, zu Epithelzellen des Darms sowie zu Keratinozyten. Aufgrund seiner geringen Größe und der gut charakterisierten Sequenz dient das Molekül in vielen Laboren als übersichtliches Modellpeptid für mechanistische Fragestellungen. Bei allen genannten Arbeiten handelt es sich um Grundlagenforschung ohne Aussagekraft für eine Anwendung beim Menschen.
