SS-31 (also referred to in the literature as elamipretide or MTP-131) is a synthetic tetrapeptide from the group of Szeto-Schiller peptides. It is characterised by its accumulation at the inner mitochondrial membrane, where studies show it binding to the phospholipid cardiolipin. In preclinical research, SS-31 is therefore examined predominantly in models of mitochondrial function, for example in cell cultures and animal models addressing membrane structure, the electron transport chain and oxidative stress. This work is basic research and permits no conclusions about effects in humans.
